Internet Marketing and Social Media Mentors – Who are You Listening To?

Having a mentor to help you through the often muddy waters of internet marketing and social media has undergone a shift from the way we used to view a traditional mentor/grasshopper model. With instant communication and voluminous content just a click away, it’s easier than ever to grab pearls of wisdom them most.

It is perhaps less prevalent that we have a single mentor anymore. We are more likely to be listening to a pastiche of voices that meet out various needs. However, a single, cohesive voice who you are frequently in contact with is always a good thing, particularly in terms of accountability. If you can develop a relationship like this, it can serve you well over the years.

The next best thing in this day of social interaction is to consort with as many of those whose work you admire and can learn from as you have time for. You can follow them on their social channels, subscribe to their blogs, newsletters or  in some cases, their membership sites. You can ask questions, get involved, be of help yourself, and before long, there will be a small circle of people you would feel comfortable asking for help. These may have been people you would never have thought would have given you the time of day before, but you’ll be surprised.

So, since I’m in a sharing mode, some of the people whose business sense, models, wisdom , and genuine helpfulness impress the heck out of me would include Kim Roach, Dave Tropeano, Michael Campbell, Michael Fortin, Chris Brogan, Jack Canfield, and a few others. These folks all have a specific gifts Iwant to learn, and all are great teachers intheir own way. Some I have personal contact with, and  others I just read everything they write!

Make sure to include time for this in your day. It’s far too easy to get buried under a mountain of tasks and shelve this part for another time. The thing is, another time never comes! Add their feeds to your RSS reader, subscribe to their newsletter, read their blogs, books and whatever else you can find. The times you spend with those who have something to teach you will enrich your life and in time, your bottom line!

Outsourcing Vs. Do-It-Yourself

Let’s look at some of the pros and cons of outsourcing your social media marketing (or any tasks, for that matter!) versus the sometimes irresistible pull to do it all yourself.

I’ve done and do both, and there are several factors at play here. If you’re just a total control freak, then no one will meet your expectations, and you need to know that going in. There comes a time though, if you truly want to grow your business you need to consider outsourcing, or perhaps cloning!

Outsourcing - The Pros

  • You can instantly scale your business. You now have given yourself more time to do the things that are necessary to move your business to the next level because you’re no longer tied down doing the manual labor. Just because it’s on the internet doesn’t mean it’s not time-consuming, mind-warping work. Listen, if you had a landscaping business, you might start out doing some or all of the work, but the “green ceiling” would soon become very apparent! There is no difference online.
  • It will dramatically improve the  speed of delivery on projects, as well as customer satisfaction. You’ll be exerting total strategic control of the projects, without having to physically do them. Your existing clients will be happier, and you’ll be able to take on more of them.
  • By outsourcing you’ll be able to take advantage of people who you hire that have an area of expertise or specialty that you may not have, thus improving the quality of your site or service.
  • By sticking your head out of the rabbit hole, you will be meeting new people, some of whom may end up being a great ally or partner down the road. You just never know. (Well, sometimes you do!)
  • Outsourcing will enable you to take tactical advantage of your competitors by not only increasing your own quality of service and amount of work you’re doing, but eventually your site will be outranking theirs due simply to the amount of content, links and attention that are being showered on it.

Cons Of Outsourcing

  • Now and then the quality won’t meet your standards, and you’ll either have to reassign the task or fix it yourself. Sometimes this will cost you money. It’s the cost of freeing up your valuable time, (which I hope is more than you are paying your outsourcers!) As time goes on, however, this happens less frequently as your list of outsourcers grows larger and more dependable.
  • You won’t have total control. This can be a hard thing to give up. It was for me. You know you can do it better, and you may very well be right! You just have to decide what’s more important to you; your time or your quest for perfection.
  • You actually have to pay people. In my mind this is a pro, but I know that many people have a problem with this initially. It’s actually sort of a right of passage for your business, as you’re now able to play with the big dogs. Don’t be stingy either! If you opt for the lowest price point out there, you will generally get the lowest quality and dependability. The highest prices may not be worth it it either. Decide on a number that will afford you the best quality and time value for investment and use this as a starting point, You can always add more later.

Social media marketing is a venture ripe for outsourcing, as the tasks of making social posts, blog posts, and creating content take up valuable time. Social marketing is also a vast and confusing landscape of sites and networks, and just keeping up with who’s who can be a challenge.  It’s a shifting playing field, with numerous player substitutions every day. Give this some thought before you start you next social media marketing campaign.

Welcome To The Social Marketer!

Hi! The Social Marketer is a place that both myself,  Keith Thompson, and my partner at Social-Marketer.com Shelby Larson have created to both contribute and learn from all the people we can in the world of social media marketing. I have been marketing on the internet for several years now, and have been writing for many more than that. Shelby also has writing roots, having ghosted many very high-profile clients you definitely have heard of.  She is also the owner of ContentDivas.com, one of the most respected content outsourcing firms out there today.

We will share what we’ve learned both as marketers, writers and content providers, and hopefully learn from all of you as we go along this journey. We’ll both be posting here regularly, and we hope to have guest interviews posted here on our blog as well.

We will always point you in the direction of voices we feel are worth listening to, as the world of Web 2.0 and social media marketing is very fluid, and a bit akin to the wild wild west! (Black-hatted villains and all!)

We know that there are many ways to reach our goals, but our emphasis will always favor the ways that appear to be the best for the long haul. It does me little good to promote for the short term, unless there is a specific path to follow, such as a particular product launch.

Make sure to check back in often, as we will be posting new content here quite regularly!
